Hannes Statella ja Antwerpenissa 1920

"Ensi vuonna hän esiintynee myöskin aivan uudella alalla, nim treenauskirjan kirjoittajana."

Uutinen loka-marraskuussa 1920.
Horse-racing scribe John J. Fitzgerald of the New York Morning Telegraph first used the phrase “Big Apple” to describe New York. He claimed to have heard the term among black stable hands at a New Orleans racetrack in 1920. In 1924, he titled his column “Around the Big Apple with John J. Fitzgerald”: “The Big Apple, The dream of every lad that ever threw a leg over a thoroughbred and the goal of all horsemen. There’s only one Big Apple. That’s New York.”

Tammikuun 17. kieltolaki Yhdysvaltoihin. Helmikuussa New Yorkin Uutisissa: Hannes edustan Suomea, lupaus harjoittelusta Suomessa, kuten nimimerkki Punahousu (Viljo Kainulainen?) kirjoitti Työväen Urheilulehdessä

22.8. Antwerpenin olympiamaraton (Suomen I olympiamaraton voittaja kiedottuna Suomen lippuun; väärä lippu salossa avajaisissa) ja samaan aikaan TUL:n kirje erottamisesta omaan huoneeseen kaupungin laidalla.

Postikortti-Hannes, 1920
Ystävystyi Paavo Nurmen kanssa Antwerpenissa. Helsingin Pallokentällä 15 olympiavoittajalle juhlat, joihin äiti Sofia Kolehmainen autolla Suomen lippu kädessään. Myös presidentti K. J. Ståhlberg onnittelijoiden joukossa ja Vanhalla ylioppilastalolla Eino Leino luovutti Sofialle runokirjansa Vapauden kirja omistuksella: "Äidille, henkisesti äveriäälle, joka on Kolehmaisen pojat synnyttänyt ja sydämessään rakastanut niiksi mitä on heistä tämän kurjan, mutta kultaisen maan maineeksi tullut."

Postikortti-Hannes, 1920
"Mutta mikä on tämä porvarilehtien koko kansa? Se on valkoinen Suomi suojeluskuntineen. Ja se ei ole edes puolet Suomen kansasta." (Työväen Urheilulehti)

"Hanneksen uhrilaulu... uhrasi Suomen veripelloille. Kiirehdi! "(Sosialisten työväenpuolueen Vapaa Kansa, Kuopio syyskuussa, nimimerkki la)

Hannes ja painija Eino Leino, rikkurit, toivat tullessaan New Yorkissa kerätyt 1300 mk vuonna 1907 perustamalleen työväenseura Riennolle, joka kuitenkin erotti kunniajäsenyydestä molemmat äänin 46 ‒ 5. Riennon perustaja Maija Tapaninen samaan aikaan etsivän keskuspoliisissa vankeudessa.

11.9. Eläintarhassa 7000 katsojaa, Jyrylle yli 100 000 mk tulot, mutta työväenlehtien mukaan Hannes "kukkarpolitiikaan takia aatteellisesti horjuva petturi sai juosta juudaksen penninsä "kansainvälisenä miehenä". Myös New Yorkin Vesa pyysi selvitystä TUL:lta Kolehmaisen osallistumisesta Jyryn kisoihin. Kun SVUL:n kisasta sai palkinnoksi kaksipiippuisen haulikon, "miksei kuularuiskua" kysyttiin työläislehdessä.
"Kansastamme on kasvava tervettä, tarmokasta, mieleltään valoisaa, yhteistoimintaan sopivaa, isänmaanrakkauden läpitunkemaa väkeä, joka elinvoimaisella lihallaan, verellään ja hengellään on arpeuttava kansalaissodan haavat", Yrjö Halmeen uudet ylisanat luopiolle; Antwerpenin maraton osoitti suomalaisen rodun voimakkuutta ja loistokkuutta; hymyilevä Hannes suurjuoksija, esikuvallinen olento, maailman ihme ja ilmestys. (Suomen Urheilulehti).

Täällä on kyllä kovin hiljaista, mutta eihän me hyvin melusta tykätäkkään." Ja Viljamille veisti: "Heillä on aikomus saada jäämään minut tänne, eikä he meinaa uskoa vaikka kuinka sanoisin, että en tahdo tulla tänne olemaan. Kyllä täällä Suomessa on kauniita paikkoja näethän näistä korteista."

Lokakuussa Ranskan kautta lähtö, marraskuussa kisa Pariisissa (Racing Clubin järjestäjät maksoivat 3000 frangia ja ylöspidon; Nurmelle vain 1000 frangia vuotta myöh.) ja seppele Jean Bounin haudalle velipoika Kallen kanssa. Vanha tuttu Kaarlo Brusin Suomen edustossa järjesti juoksupalkinnon sijasta rahaa Ranskasta.

17.11. New Yorkiin lähtö.

Yhdysvaltain Antwerpenin maraton-protestin taustahenkilöitä:

James E. Sullivanin seuraaja Amerikan olympiakomitean presidenttinä Gustavus T. Kirby ja tuomari Bartow S. Weeks, IAAC:n pahimman kilpailijan NYAC:n johtajat, tekivät protestin Antwerpenissa ja sen jatkona halusivat Kolehmaisen Amerikan kansalaiseksi.

Collectively, these Olympic leaders had self-confidence, fervent commitment, managerial skills, money and public relations talents to develop the Olympic Games before they became a commercial advertising property and televised entertainment. Each of them cultivated a persona that would enhance their personal image and promote the Olympic principles.

James E. Sullivan (1862-1914) was an Irish-American athlete who emerged as one of the founders of the Amateur Athletic Union (AAA) in 1888. He became a sports publicist and promoter. Through his publication of The Athletic News and the Spalding’s Official Almanac, he played a major role in promoting the Olympic Movement in the United States. He was director for the 1904 St. Louis Olympics.

Through his publications, he played a major role in promoting the Olympic Movement in the United States. The “finest hour” of this son of an immigrant Irish laborer came in 1908, when he led the American team at the London Olympics and waged a minor war against the officiating of British sportsmen in the “Battle of Shepherd’s Bush.” The Sullivan Award for the outstanding amateur athlete perpetuated his name.

Gustavus Kirby (1874-1956) was the son of an art dealer descended from Maryland’s Eastern Shore pirates and Philadelphians. He graduated from Columbia in Electrical Engineering and practiced law in New York. In 1895, he met Coubertin. A year later, he was a spectator at the Athens Olympics. He managed and officiated at sporting events and invented an electric timer. A familiar fi gure at New York track meets and horse shows, he was also interested in public recreation and civic improvement. A “people person”, he was an American Olympic Committee officer and enjoyed the Games. Among the people he met were Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini. His personality alienated European IOC members and he became a self-appointed conscience for Brundage and other Americans.

The very busy "Gus" Kirby, with half-a-dozen major obligations, including the invention of the instant picture, photoelectric sport camera, resigned as AOA president and was succeeded on November 22, 1922, by the former AOC president, the seventy-one year old, Col. R. M. Thompson, who took charge of both Olympic organizations. 10 The double-committee members from the AOC-AOA, almost all “old-line” AAU loyals, now assembled on a regular basis at the New York Athletic Club (NYAC), where Thompson was president,or, even better, on the colonel’s luxury yacht anchored in New York Harbor. A renewed sense of purpose melded to new and, hopefully, more efficient Olympic committees prepared for the First Olympic Winter Gamesin Chamonix, France, and the summer Olympic Games in Paris, both in the year 1924.

David Thompson (1849-1930) was the son of a Pennsylvania judge. He graduated from the Naval

Academy in 1864. In 1870, he resigned his Navy commission and entered Harvard Law School. After graduation, he investigated land titles of Canadian mining fi rms. He then became manager of a copper company and board chairman of the International Nickel Company. He was also a partner in a stock and cotton brokerage fi rm. He became very wealthy and retired in 1909. He supported the Navy League, the Military Order of the Loyal Legion, and the American and International Olympic Committees. He was president of the New York Athletic Club and a colonel on the staff of a New Jersey governor. He was a large, vigorous and athletic person, who invested wisely, profited from the expansion of the United States Navy and traveled on his private yachts. He was a fi nancial “angel” for every American Olympic team from 1912 to 1928.7

Daniel Ferns (1889-1977) was an Irish-American sprinter from Pawling, New York. He succeeded

James Sullivan as AAU president in 1912 and served as the secretary-treasurer until 1957. He edited the Amateur Athlete from 1927 to 1961 and dealt with the New York press and sports writers. He raised funds for the Olympics and worked with officers to interpret the rules and realities of amateur athletics. He attended every Olympics from 1912 to 1972 and worked closely with Avery Brundage. He was thoughtful, courteous and soft-spoken and a strong believer in the amateur ideal.

Hannes New Yorkissa ja Suomessa 1914

Toivo T. Kaila: "Hannes Kolehmainen", WSOY 1926, 144.

Asui edelleen Brooklynissa kaksikerroksisen talon kivijalkakerroksessa. Huone matala, pimeä ja kostea. IAAC:n harjoitteluradat hyvät, mutta kesäpaikassa juotiin viinaa.
Shrubb, Hannes, Kiviat,
"Hannes Kolehmainen", 81.

"Kolehmainen’s leg injury that had kept him from defending his American crosscountry title lingered into the winter indoor season and hampered his training. Still gimpy in late January 1914, Kolehmainen nevertheless agreed to face-off against Kiviat in a two-mile match-race that promoters dubbed the foot-racing ‘championship of the world’. However, AAU and AOC potentate James Sullivan barred race organisers and the Thirteenth Regiment National Guard Armory from using any reference to a world championship, arguing that such hyperbole was restricted exclusively for the Olympic games.

In spite of the Sullivan’s ban of world championship rhetoric, the match-up drew tremendous interest in New York City. Thousands of fans packed the Armory for the 25 January event, a gala headlined by the Kolehmainen–Kiviat race that included several other footraces and bicycle races. Once again, Kolehmainen and Kiviat finished in a ‘dead heat’. Unlike their previous match-race, where fans were thrilled by a tie, their meagre time of 10:05:8 and their lead-footed running aroused the wrath of spectators. Much of the crowd thought the race had been fixed. A New York Times correspondent reported that ‘cries of ‘‘fake’’ and ‘‘frame up’’ . . . could be heard through [a] storm of hoots and jeers’. The scribe added that even ‘the officials of the games looked on the event with suspicion’.

Lawson Robertsonin kolumni.
The New York Globe sportswriter Howard Valentine immediately came to the defence of Kolehmainen and Kiviat. Valentine admitted that a ‘more miserable contest to watch there never was’ and described the runners as ‘reeling along like a couple of 4 am drunks’, but maintained ‘it was not a fake race’. Kiviat’s employer, a race official, also defended the honour of the runners, insisting, ‘[i]f I thought Kiviat had taken part in a framed race I would throw him out of my shop. I wouldn’t bother opening the door either; I’d chuck him right through the plate glass’.

Kolehmainen’s coach also leapt to the defence of the IAAC’s dynamic distance tandem. Lawson Robertson denounced their detractors as ‘liars’ and declared that the race was marred by the fact that Kolehmainen was injured and Kiviat was ill. In spite of those spirited defences, the furore over their uninspired ‘dead heat’ compelled the Metropolitan AAU to suspend Kolehmainen and Kiviat pending a thorough investigation. Through an interpreter, Kolehmainen testified to the investigators that he was injured and had run as fast as he could under the circumstances. Kiviat produced a doctor who revealed that the IAAC star had run in spite of the physician’s advice to drop out of the race. Both men insisted that the race had not been fixed. Kiviat threatened to quit the sport if the AAU did not repair his reputation. A dozen witnesses supported the claims made by the runners. The Metropolitan AAU relented, reinstating both runners and clearing them of any wrong-doing. The bureaucrats did censure the athletic officials of the Thirteenth Regiment, alleging that since the race organisers had known of the poor condition of both runners, they should have cancelled the event rather than allowed the debacle.

Brooklynissä Hannes ihastui naapuritalossa asuvaan Alma Johnsoniin ennen Suomen-matkaa, jossa viipyy yli puoli vuotta, vaikka piti palata juhannukseksi.

(Alma Adele Johnson, s. 1895 Amerikassa Finntownissa, sisar Martha Lovisa (s. 1898), käynyt New Yorkissa naisten taideopiston tarkoituksena valmistua tekstiilitaiteilijaksi, soitteli pianoa ja maalasi, kunnes naimisiin, kihloihin lokakuussa 1915, häät jo 1915 Brooklynin suomalaiskirkossa 22.12.1915, koska Hannes Chester syntyy jo kesäkuussa 1916 New Yorkissa.)

Aion edustaa Irish-American Athletic Clubia ikuisesti."

Turussa 21.5. hieno vastaanotto, 6000 ‒ 8000 ihailijaa. Samppalinnassa SVUL:n juhlat, Jyryn miesten kanssa Helsinkiin (Viljo Miettinen&John Lindberg), jonka rautatieasemalla Savolaisen laulu ja kansallispukuiset jyryttäret kukkittivat; kolmen päivän juhlat. Kuopiossa III kertaa äidin luona, käveli Niuvanniemen ympäri ja juoksi iltapäivällä Väinölänniemellä, seuraavana aamuna kävely Pitkäänlahteen.

"Dear Alma, Olemme olleet täällä jo viikon päivät ilmat ovat kerrassaan kauniita. Piimää ja vehnästä on syöty kovasti. Olen myöskin juoksennellut välillä joten luulen pian pääseväni kuntoon Odotan sinulta kirjettä jonka takia en tällä kertaa kirjoita enempää. Kävimme tuolla tornissa (Puijon näkötorni) tänään. Paljon terveisiä teille kaikille. Hannes" Tehtaanjohtaja Herman Saastamoinen pyysi metsästysretkelle.

Kunniajäsenyydet Jyryssä ja Turun Urheiluliitossa.  Riennon toveriliitto Tarun I kokous, jonka takia tuli Suomeen 1914, juhli juhannusta tarulaisten kanssa: "Terveiset täältä. Olemme täällä juhlimassa juhannuksena. Nyt on mainio ilma, lämmin ja raitis. Kaikki täällä lähettävät terveisiä... terveisi minultakin Kalle K ja Yrjö Koivistoinen."

Paluu syyskuussa Amerikkaan, koska aikoi opiskella valmentajaksi Lawson Robertsonin johdolla, kuten Kaarlo Nieminen Columbian yliopistossa valmensi kestävyysjuoksijoita. Ja I maailmansota pilasi suunnitelman valmentautua Suomessa Berliiniin, jonne Suomelle ei myönnetty oikeutta osallistua.
